Choosing a double stroller is similar to buying a normal stroller. The first step in buying one is always to think about how you will be using your stroller.
Other than deciding on the basic double stroller design; tandem or side-by-side, the remaining considerations are not too different from normal single-seat strollers.
Stroller Type
Combi double strollers also come in lightweight, standard and jogging types. Lightweight strollers are smaller framed, less well-equipped and usually made of lighter materials. They are easy to carry around and set up, and they are ideal for use in urban environments. Standard strollers are bulkier and normally more stable. They are made sturdier and also have better suspension systems for a more comfortable ride. But their size makes them more suitable for suburban environments rather than the crowded city. Lastly, the jogging type of stroller is for athletic parents who want to start their kids young. Jogging with your child in a combi double stroller can be a risky affair. Jogging strollers normally have a three wheeled design and have very large wheels to increase stability as well as to facilitate turning at high speeds.
Weight Capacity
Like any carriers, combi double strollers are also designed with a weight limit in mind. Smaller lighter strollers have a lower weight limit and may not be able to carry your child as he/she grows heavier. Since your children are always going to get heavier, it may be advisable to look for a larger stroller right from the start. However a larger combi double stroller will be problematic for the first few months when your child does not fit properly into the stroller. Larger and heavier combi double strollers may also pose a problem when you try to fit them into your car.
Material & Durability
Combi double strollers are commonly made of a mixture of plastics, steel and aluminium. Lightweight strollers commonly contain more plastic in their structure, making them easier to push around. However plastics are less durable and tend to crack over time. Steel and aluminium frames are much stronger than plastic ones, but they are also much heavier. Aluminium is still lighter than steel, but aluminium frames can bend and distort easily under heavy loads.
When choosing your combi double stroller make, think about how often you will be using it. For frequent use, you should go for more durable materials. But if it's the ease of transportation that you are looking for, you may prefer to buy a lightweight combi double stroller and replace it with a new one when it wears out.
Additional Features
Most combi double strollers are not too different from one another, and competing manufacturers try their best to differentiate their products using different features that are not necessary in strollers, but may be helpful in their use.
One of the differentiating features is the wide range of combi double stroller accessories. However, accessories do not fit universally. Some accessories may only fit a limited selection of combi double strollers while others may be designed especially for its own brand line of strollers. While accessories shouldn't be your main consideration for deciding on a stroller, they can help you make a choice when you're torn between two or more strollers that you like.
Other features in strollers include adjustable handlebars for use with different heights or reclining seats for children to sleep in. These features are meant to be helpful, but usually they are not a must for most parents.
There is not one stroller that will fit everybody's needs. Some parents need larger strollers for bigger children while some have to stick with smaller strollers because they need to take buses with their strollers. The key point is to understand your own needs and choose a stroller that will help you best. Sometimes, it may be even better to get more than one stroller for use under different situations than to try to get through with just one.
